MARATHON, Florida Keys - For children age 8 and older, popular summer Marine Science Camps held on the tiny island of Pigeon Key, an unusual historic site in the Florida Keys, present an exciting summer learning opportunity.

Camp sessions are set for Monday through Friday, July 9-13 and July 30 – Aug. 3 and include a choice between day camp and overnight camp. Space is limited and slots fill quickly.

Designed to offer hands-on daily programs, Pigeon Key Marine Science Camp includes workshops on marine mammals, reef fish, coral reef systems and invertebrates as well as hard and soft corals found in Florida and Caribbean waters.

Specimens are gathered in the tidal waters that surround Pigeon Key. They are then contained in touch tanks and selected one by one by an educational team to monitor and highlight their role in the ecosystem.

The fun is as extensive as the marine education. Underwater obstacle courses, fishing, snorkeling, campfires and day excursions are all part of the camp sessions.

Participants also can opt to get their scuba certification during a camp session or take a refresher course if already certified.

For more than 15 years, Pigeon Key Marine Science Camps have provided private customized programs to more than 30,000 participants from more than 1,000 schools throughout the United States. Groups from as far away as the outskirts of Alaska and the Bering Sea have traveled to Pigeon Key for its educational opportunities.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Pigeon Key is located beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge at mile marker 47 bayside. In the early 1900s, the five-acre island was a camp for laborers building the Over-Sea Railroad that connected the Florida Keys with the mainland for the first time in January 2012.

Today it features quaint restored cottages and a museum that showcases the railroad's fascinating history. The island was featured as a final destination for contestants of the CBS realty program “The Amazing Race.”

Cost for Pigeon Key Summer Day Camp is $300 per child for the day camp only, $500 for camp with a PADI scuba refresher course or $750 per child for the day camp including a scuba certification class. Minimum age requirements apply for scuba classes. Cost for overnight camp is $950.

Early registration is suggested to guarantee a spot for a camp session.
