· Willard Intercontinental Voted Washington D.C.'s Best Hotel In Washingtonpost.com's Best Bets 2003 Reader's Choice WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 8, 2003) - Over 122,000 registered users logged into Washingtonpost.com's 2003 Reader's Choice Best Bets survey, first to nominate, then to vote for their favorite local establishments. On August 18, the winners were chosen, revealing the Willard InterContinental "Washington's Best Hotel." News of the award came just days following the results of Travel + Leisure magazine's World's Best Awards survey which designated the Willard as the "Best Hotel for Business Travelers in Washington DC."
From April 28 through May 30, Washingtonpost.com readers were asked to determine the top ten nominees in each of 50 categories encompassing bars, clubs, city life, shopping, restaurants and hotels. The month-long voting process resulted in the definitive list of Washingtonpost.com readers' favorites. Category winners were published both in the Washington Post Magazine and on the newspaper's popular Web site. "We are honored to receive this vote of confidence from the highly discerning Washingtonpost.com readers," said Jean-Jacques Reibel, General Manager, Willard InterContinental Washington, "We are committed to providing innovative offerings for our local guests in an elegant and inviting atmosphere." The Crown Jewel of Pennsylvania Avenue and an American and international favorite since 1850, the historic Willard InterContinental is well known for providing elegant and accessible offerings for both visiting guests and the local community. These include such events as Cherry Blossoms at The Willard - a highly visual, multi-faceted springtime celebration; Holiday Lobbying - a free live music holiday celebration throughout the month of December; pre-theater, opera and ballet dinners and the annual Kentucky Derby party at the historic Round Robin Bar. The historic Willard InterContinental Hotel is the "Grande Dame" of American hotels. It is a Washington institution that has hosted almost every U.S. president since Zachary Taylor in 1850. It was here that Julia Ward Howe wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", where Abraham Lincoln lived for a month, where, in the grand lobby, President Ulysses S. Grant coined the term "Lobbyist", and where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King finished his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. From its inception to this day, the Willard has been a major force in the social and political life of Washington, DC.
