· Telluride Adaptive Sports Program Hosts Adaptive Downhill Mountain Biking & Hand Cycling Clinic August 16-17, 2003 TELLURIDE, CO (July 22, 2003) - For the first time in its eight-year history, the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program will set its wheels in motion bike wheels, that is. This summer, on August 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. 4 p.m., TASP will offer a cycling clinic to Telluride locals and visitors. Cost is $45 per day or $80 for the weekend. (Those interested in downhill only, cost is $35 per day; those interested in hand cycling only, cost is $10 per day.) The workshop is a two-part program, hosted by TASP, with guest instruction offered by two Colorado organizations. The Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte will present the downhill mountain biking clinic and Adaptive Adventures of Evergreen will present the hand cycling clinic. Instructors are highly skilled and experienced in disabled cycling and include such individuals as Chris Read (downhill mountain biking instructor) and Matt Feeney (hand cycling instructor). Read is the head instructor and program coordinator with ASC having worked with the Crested Butte program for four years. (He was affiliated with Winter Park's disabled sports program prior to Crested Butte.) Read organizes cycling events all summer but this is ASC's first time in Telluride. He is an avid cyclist, mountain biking whenever and as much as possible. Feeney is program director of Adaptive Adventures. He was the sit-ski program coordinator for the Winter Park Disabled Sports Program for nine year! s but resigned last year to work with Adaptive Adventures full time. Adaptive Adventures serves as an outdoor adventure liaison to individuals, groups and other organizations year-round. During the summer, water sports (water skiing and hand cycling) and hand cycling are its primary focuses. Feeney, an avid snow skier, water skier and hand cyclist, has visited Telluride numerous times for winter events but never for summer ones.
"I always look forward to Telluride, whatever time of year, as it's one of my favorite places on the planet," said Feeney. "I also think it's really exciting that TASP is expanding into more summer activities and I'm looking forward to being a part of it." TASP Executive Director Colleen Trout is very excited about the upcoming clinic. "This is something new for us and we think it's going to be great," she said. "We're hoping to get a lot of interest so that we can host clinics like this in the future as well as invest in our own equipment to have it available for use at any time." The weekend begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with a continental breakfast and introduction at the TASP office in the Mountain Village Activities Center. Sunday's meeting place will be announced. ResortQuest will be offering 20 percent off lodging (contact 866-538-7779) and Telluride's Town Park Campground offers campsites for $12 per night on a first-come-first-serve basis (contact 970-728-2173).
