· Celebrity Cruises Announces Its First Environmental Ship Of The Year Award MIAMI - Celebrity Cruises today announced that its ship, Infinity, has been selected for the company's first Environmental Ship Of The Year Award.
The award, which will be presented annually, is designed to encourage Celebrity's long-standing commitment to environmental innovation and improvement. Competition for the award assists the company in progressively advancing its environmental performance in manners that go above and beyond regulatory compliance. Judging for the awards was conducted by the independent external auditing firm, Haley and Aldrich, which audits all nine Celebrity ships for adherence to the company's Environmental Compliance Plan. "I congratulate our Infinity team for their ship's selection as our first Environmental Ship Of The Year," said Dietmar Wertanzl, Celebrity's senior vice president of Fleet Operations. "The outstanding achievements by Infinity, and by the crews onboard the other ships in our fleet, demonstrate Celebrity's commitment to environmental excellence and continuous improvement. I thank all of our employees who do so much to make environmental advances onboard all our ships." The selection of the Environmental Ship Of The Year was based on seven criteria established by Celebrity and its independent external auditors and covered all of 2002. The criteria evaluated included audit findings related to environmental performance, timeliness and effectiveness of corrective actions, reports of near incidents and non-conformities, the submission of monthly environmental status reports, and the performance of pollution prevention equipment. In the award, Infinity's crew was cited for its enthusiasm and dedication to sustaining an environmental program of the highest order. This was demonstrated throughout 2002 by the ship's outstanding performance in its numerous external audits and compliance verifications. The crew was praised for its commitment to continuous improvement through its setting environmental goals and objectives related to the elimination of plastic service items within the Food and Beverage department and water conservation. Additionally, the ship's crew was credited for its commitment to compliance with the International Standards Organization's 14001 ideals for continuous improvement in environmental performance. "This award symbolizes the collective effort and continuous teamwork on all our ships and the hard work of their crews to protect the waters on which we live and work," said Captain Bill Wright, Celebrity's senior vice president of Safety, Security and Environment. "For years to come, ships within the Celebrity fleet will be honored by this award. Infinity has set the mark and begun a new tradition of environmental excellence for everyone to follow." As part of their award, the Infinity crew will be given a $25,000 grant they can use with any environmental project or charity they choose. The industry's highest-rated premium cruise line with a taste of luxury, Celebrity Cruises' nine-ship fleet is the youngest of any major line.
