· Historic Hotels of America Selects the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans For 2004 Annual Meeting WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 3, 2003) - National Trust Historic Hotels of America announces the selection of the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans as the site for its 2004 annual meeting. Approximately 200 people representing historic hotels, resorts and inns throughout the country will attend the meeting November 17-19, 2004.
"Everyone loves New Orleans! No other city offers such a vast tradition of culture, history, architecture, great food and fun for conference attendees," said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. "We expect this meeting to attract record attendance." Andrea Thornton, director of sales for the Hotel Monteleone, enthusiastically invited her peers to attend the meeting. "New Orleans has it all. This association of world-class hoteliers will experience first-hand everything that makes New Orleans a favorite destination for domestic and international travelers alike." The Monteleone is one of the last great family-owned hotels in America, having been operated by four generations of Monteleones over the past century. When it was founded in 1886, Royal Street, on which it sits, was the most fashionable and elegant street in the city-it still is today. The hotel's famed grandfather clock still chimes in the lobby surrounded by glittering chandeliers, polished marble floors and gleaming brass appointments. Numerous authors, including William Faulkner, Eudora Welty and Truman Capote were frequent visitors, and the hotel has often appeared as a setting in American fiction, prompting the Friends of Libraries ASA to designate the Monteleone a Literary Landmark. Founded in 1989 to promote heritage tourism, National Trust Historic Hotels of America is an exclusive program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. National Trust Historic Hotels of America has identified 203 quality hotels that have faithfully maintained their historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. To be selected for this program, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance.
