In the past two years ornaments have featured a relief image of the grand beaux-arts hotel exterior and a reproduction of the Willard's famous "W" lobby mosaic. And this year, the 2003 ornament is a colorful, enamel-like rendition of a newly commissioned Willard hotel portrait, by local artist, Pawinee McEntire. Each new year the Willard holiday ornament design will recall themes from the hotel's rich history, stately architecture, and elegant surroundings. The ornaments, which are hand assembled of brass, screen printed and plated in 24 karat gold, are on display in the Willard Grand Lobby, and available for purchase for $25 in the business center located next to the concierge desk. It was here that Julia Ward Howe wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", where Abraham Lincoln lived for a month, where, in the grand lobby, President Ulysses S. Grant coined the term "Lobbyist", and where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King finished his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
