· Christmas on the Comstock 2003 VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. (November 21, 2003) - Take the family on a short trip up the hill from Reno or Carson City to Virginia City, this year, in December, for Christmas on the Comstock.
* Avoid the jammed big-city streets by drinking in the charm and old-fashioned hospitality and Christmas Spirit by peering in the gaily decorated windows as you meander down C Street. * Visit the wide variety of charming shops and friendly merchants in Virginia City. Find curious and fanciful gifts handpicked especially for this "Christmas on the Comstock" season. * Tickle your sweet tooth with fresh made candy or as a great souvenir have the family's picture taken dressed in costumes of the olden days. * After shopping all day, don't forget to visit the museums and the 4th Ward School and make your way over the hill to the famous Gold Hill Hotel see the glorious Grand Dame decked out in her finest holiday duds. If you're there on Saturday, December 6th at 5 pm line up along C Street, grab a bag of freshly roasted chestnuts and a hot drink and enjoy the spectacular Silver Christmas Parade of Lights. Late entrants are welcome and the line up is at 4:30 PM at the 4th Ward School. The annual Silver Christmas parade, the locals and visitors' favorite features the usual and unforgettable cast of characters and vehicles as they make their way down the main street of Virginia City. Everyone looks forward to seeing Santa at the end of parade. The fireworks display after the parade kicks off the festive Comstock Christmas season. Historic Piper's Opera House will host The Nutcracker Ballet Saturday afternoon before the parade at 2:30 pm and at 7:30 pm after the parade. Call Piper's for more information and tickets (775) 847-0433. Ticket price range $8.00 to $25.00 or a family pack for $25.00. The 5th Annual Gingerbread Contest is another favorite activity. The gingerbread creations display is a feast for the eyes. Previous contests were for Gingerbread Houses only, but that changed a couple of years ago. Now, adults and children are encouraged to enter their original creations of anything Gingerbread. The entry fee is $10.00. Free to kids creations, 13 and under. Obtain entry forms by calling the Virginia City-Gold Hill Chamber of Commerce at 847 0311 or stop by the Chamber office located at the Old Crystal Bar. Entry forms may be dropped off by November 30th to the Chamber office or mailed to P. O. Box 464 and must be postmarked by November 30th. The creations need to be delivered to the 4th Ward School by Saturday, December 6th. Gingerbread entries must be made entirely of edible material except for the base and lighting. All entries become the property of Christmas on the Comstock. The entries will be displayed at the 4th Ward School until they're auctioned off at the Gingerbread Social at 7 pm at the 4th Ward School Museum on December 13th. 1st Place Winners in the adult division will receive $175 cash. Kids will win savings bonds. The winner's name will be placed on the winner's plaque. Proceeds benefit the 4th Ward School Meet Santa at Zepha's Cove Saturdays and Sundays in December before Christmas. Memories of Christmas past will come flooding back when you hear the sweet sounds of traditional Christmas music by the strolling carollers. Buy that special handmade gift at the Holiday Craft Fair & Bazaar December 13th & 14th from 8am - 5pm at the Senior Center on the corner of Mill and E streets. On Thursday, December 18th Piper's Opera House is the location of the 16th Annual Boar's Head Feast, a medieval dinner and solstice celebration featuring a multi-course dinner, Celtic music and entertainment.
