Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau President Katy Brown has been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) as one of the leading young professionals in the tourism industry. Brown was recently honored as a member of the inaugural 'Forty for the Future' class of 2012. An exploration of atomic testing phenomena and subsequent 1950's atomic culture is captured in "DOOMTOWN," the original paintings of atomic art by Doug Waterfield in his exhibition opening October 12 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. When the Atomic Energy Commission, predecessor to the Department of Energy, began 1950's testing of atomic bombs in the Nevada Test Site, the creation of several "Survival Towns" also known as "Doomtowns" were part of the test.

Museum of Appalachia, a Smithsonian Affiliate, visitors will celebrate July 4 with an explosion of sound that pioneers heard thunder through the hills when they celebrated Independence Day. Anvil shooting used to be a common way that rural folks celebrated special events. They "shot the anvil" to celebrate the nation's Independence, Christmas, and even Davy Crockett's election to the U.S. Congress. Some years ago, two men, each more than 100 years old, watched the Museum's anvil shoot and recalled this tradition from their early boyhood.

One of the highlights of the annual Secret City Festival are the series of Manhattan Project tours that run all day Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16. Three of the tours depart from the American Museum of Science & Energy (AMSE) at scheduled times. In addition, the Secret City Scenic Excursion Train will be chugging along during the festival. Normally, the train only runs on the Saturday of the festival, but this year, trains will be departing on both Friday and Saturday.

The winter season is one of the toughest seasons for rowing athletes as they move indoors onto rowing machines to begin the grueling conditioning that brings boat speed when spring returns them to the water. Atomic Rowing program does just this, following a very formal winter conditioning plan that they perform four to five days a week working on the rowing stroke technique, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and strength.

On Saturday, September 17, Southern Appalachia Railway Museum (SARM) hosted an intensive day of classes focused on the railroad industry for nearly 200 area Boy Scouts. The session's topics included railroad safety, diesel locomotives, braking systems, modern freight car types and many other subjects. The Scouts also learned how to use a railroad timetable to plan a trip between two cities and better understand railroad operations.

Reed, who teaches at Alma College in Alma, Michigan will speak to the group on June 9. The meeting will begin at 7 pm at the Midtown Community Center, also known as the Wildcat Den, located at 102 Robertsville Road.

There are a few changes to this year's World War II Reenactment that should get visitors to the 9th Annual Secret City Festival excited. The festival takes place at AK Bissell Park on June 17 - 18. In previous years, the WWII Reenactment has taken place twice on Saturday, with approximately 200 reenactors from both sides of the conflict, black powder, loud booms, and lots of action.

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will host the 2011 Egg Hunt on April 16 at 11 a.m. Hundreds of children are expected to participate in this annual spring event. Over 15,000 candy and prize filled eggs will be hidden in Bissell Park with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize egg in each age group. This event will be held rain or shine so participants should dress for the weather. If severe weather prevents hiding the eggs outdoors, they will be given away in the gym and a drawing will be held for the prizes.

In a Community Lecture entitled "The Last Reunion: The Class of 1952 Comes Home to the Secret City" Jay Searcy, a national award-winning sports writer who grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee during World War II, will take us into the lives of the people who experienced the miracle of Oak Ridge.
