The competition drew nearly 200 entrants, ranging from big-city neighborhoods to tiny rural towns and historic districts, from around the United States. The railroad and its construction are showcased in Flagler Speedway to Sunshine, a comprehensive new exhibit at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, 281 Front St. The exhibit also spotlights the upcoming 100th anniversary of the inaugural trains Key West arrival Jan. 22, 2012.

A new artificial reef is open to sport divers and anglers following the May 27 scuttling of a 523-foot-long former U.S. Air Force missile-tracking ship. The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second-largest vessel in the world ever purposely sunk to become an artificial reef, now lies about seven miles south of Key West in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The bottom of the ship's hull rests on sand at depths that average 145 feet, but the ship is so massive the superstructure begins about 45 feet below the surface.

The 14th annual Key West Songwriters' Festival will be held April 29 - May 3, 2009. This year's festival revolves around five days and nights of more than 20 free concerts, staged at an array of the island's most popular drinking holes and hot spots. More than 100 chart-topping songwriters are scheduled to perform their hit songs and preview new melodies. Some of the headliners are responsible for writing hits for artists such as Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Faith Hill and Randy Travis.

A new $93-million Jewfish Creek Bridge, near the top of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, opened Thursday helping enhance safety and scenic views for motorists. The dedication of the 65-foot-high, 1.25-mile span also marked the halfway point of a six-year, $300 million project to build a new connector road, known as the "18-mile Stretch," from the South Florida mainland to Key Largo and the Keys.
