Tourism equals economic development. That is the straightforward message the Southeast Tourism Society plans to take to Washington, D.C., during its May 11-12 STS Grassroots Congressional Summit. Representatives for the 12 STS states, which stretch from West Virginia to Florida to Arkansas and Louisiana, have scheduled individual and group meetings with members of Congress in cooperation with the National Tour Association, a leading trade organization in the group tour industry.

More than 60 tourism professionals earned certification as a "Travel Marketing Professional" (TMP) after completing the three-year program of Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Marketing College. Sixty-four students were recognized as new TMPs , with 39 coming in person to be recognized for this achievement at the STS spring meeting in Destin, Fla. STS Marketing College started in 1992, and 628 people have earned TMP certification.

The Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) has named the seven-state southeast region its "Chapter of the Year." Representatives of Southeast Travel and Tourism Research (SETTRA) received the award at TTRA's national conference in Philadelphia earlier this month. There are nine TTRA chapters; the southeast chapter covers Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
