Parades, Parties And Masquerades: It's Carnaval Time In Cozumel

Excitement Builds as the over 100-year-old Cozumel Tradition Approaches

COZUMEL, Mexico (February 17, 2009) - The island of Cozumel is gearing up for the traditional seven-day celebration of Carnaval, which begins with the coronation of Carnaval royalty on February 18. The family-oriented affair boasts events throughout the month of February, but the real fiesta starts on February 18 when the streets of Cozumel flood with delectable cuisine, elaborate costumes, dancing and festive Carnaval music.

"The whole island of Cozumel erupts with excitement this time of year," said Raul Marrufo, director of the Cozumel Tourism Promotion Board. "It's fantastic to see both visitors and Cozumeleños alike indulge in the family-friendly festivities of Cozumel's annual Carnaval celebration."

Cozumel's Carnaval customs are some of the oldest in the Yucatan Peninsula. The exotic flavor and culture of the island create a dynamic energy that is shown through the glittering costumes and elaborate floats flaunted throughout the week. Locals prepare all year to strut their stuff in the annual dance competitions. All dancers are displayed in the parades, so every Carnavalero is a winner. No one is left out of the celebration; the island's pets have a costume contest too!

As Carnaval week progresses, the celebrations continue to build with a multitude of floats and colorful spectacles, nightly street fairs with traditional foods and concerts, and daily musical performances through the streets of downtown San Miguel. Culminating to the final procession on Tuesday night, Carnaval ends on Wednesday, February 25 with the ceremonial burning of Don Juan Carnaval and Cozumel returns to normal, until Carnaval next year, of course.
