$50,000 Trout On The Loose
Thirty tagged trout, one worth $50,000 to whomever catches it, will be dumped into northern California's Trinity Lake late this month. As part of the second annual fishing contest, the three-day tournament is held to celebrate the lake, fishing and California's Free Fishing Day (September 27, when you don't need a license to fish). Contest starts September 26, ends September 28, both those days do require a fishing license for anyone over 15 years old, so the big action might be on the free day. But there's plenty of space - 145 miles of shoreline around the lake, plus all that water just waiting for fishing boats.
Even if none of the tagged fish are caught, the organizers will still give away $25,000 in goods and services, like luxury houseboat rentals, cabin and RV stays, powerboat and personal watercraft uses, dinners at Timbers Restaurant and a variety of merchandise. Winners of non-tagged prizes will be drawn from entrees at Forever Resorts' three locations: Cedar Stock, Trinity Center and Pinewood Cove. Get there early - contest starts at 7:00 am Friday, September 26, and ends at 4:00 pm Sunday, September 28, followed by Cedar Stock's big barbeque and prize drawing at 5:00 pm. 'Course, if you catch a tagged trout, you're an automatic winner. The experts say best bait for trout includes worms, salmon eggs, powerbait, artificial lures and flies (the tied kind, not the buzzing kind). Use light line, 4- to 6-pound test, small hooks size 10 - 14 and small sinkers. Registration fee is $5. Proceeds will be used in conjunction with California Game & Fish to restock fish in Trinity Lake. For more information, contact Trinity Lake Resorts & Marinas at 530-286-2225. For information on houseboat and powerboat rentals, visit www.TrinityLakeResort.com. There'll be 30 of those suckers in the water and one of them is worth $50,000, so get out there! - Rich Steck & Judi Janofsky ![]() |
