Exploring Amelia Island Plantation
(Part Three of a Three-Part Series on Amelia Island Plantation)
By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck Exploring the natural sanctuary of Amelia Island Plantation is like stepping back in time several hundred years. Whether traveling by foot or bike, you’ll discover the same pristine ecosystem that pirates who landed here found. Sand oaks, growing in the dunes’ sandy soil, reach skyward 50 to 60 feet, with rough-barked trunks five-feet thick. Raccoons, turtles, shore birds and other wildlife scurry busily across the sand under and around the great oak limbs. More inland, fan-shaped palmettos, magnolias, cypresses and wisteria grow among the mass of live oaks which form the bulk of the resort’s acres of shady woodlands. Most of these are large, with graceful Spanish moss dripping from their twisted limbs, a testament to their age – many 200 to 400 years old.
The resort’s nature center focuses on the Plantation’s natural environment. From here guests can join naturalists on a stroll through a maritime forest where they’ll discover the species that call the forest their home. Or by bike – there are over seven miles of trails – to take in the views of the woodlands and salt marsh. There’s even a tour by segway (they’re actually pretty easy to ride). For a more relaxing sense of nature, guests can head to the Spa which offers dozens of treatments that encourage nature and nurture, including the Watsu massage, a coconut crème scrub followed by a Vichy shower. ...More
