Going Green in the Galapagos
There’s a small company in the Galapagos that’s “walking the talk” of sustainable tourism in the fragile and at-threat ecosystem of this unique part of the world. It’s called Ecoventura and its small fleet of touring vessels has become the pacesetter in responsible tourism to the Galapagos Islands. Through its core commitment to the ongoing sustainability of this endangered area, Ecoventura has become a case study for communities and regions seeking to discourage the negative effects of irresponsible tourism.
Through an initiative of Ecoventura’s president and owner Santiago Dunn, the company has spent upwards of $500,000 to refurbish its four-yacht fleet in order to meet its own stringent ecology-minded standards. It has pledged to collect, through client donations and its own infusions, almost $250,000 dollars over the next three years for the Galapagos Marine Biodiversity Fund to support environmental education and marine conservation. Of course, on one level this is self-serving; if the fragile ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands are irreversibly damaged by tourism, Ecoventura is out of business. But on a higher level, this small company is doing its part to raise the consciousness of travelers to leave a collective footprint that’s positive, not disastrous. The company began running yacht tours in the Galapagos in 1991 and began “greening” its operations and equipment in 1999. Since then it has actively chosen to help preserve the ecological integrity of the Galapagos Islands for both scientific and economic benefits.
