Maritime History & Country Inns
(Last in a two-part series)
By Patricia and Robert Foulke Editor’s note: On a recent journey of nostalgia, the Foulkes returned to England where they’d lived earlier during portions of their academic careers. Part of their trip included visits to favorite country inns and places of maritime interest. Yesterday’s feature reported on Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Hampshire. Today, it’s ... Devon The new Mayflower Visitor Centre in Plymouth overlooks the harbor and the stair the Pilgrims used to embark on the last stage of their voyage to America. It has displays on seafaring history dating from the bronze age, voyages to the New World, the background of the Pilgrim fathers and their life in the new world. The Mayflower Memorial in Dartmouth commemorates the visit of both the Mayflower and the Speedwell when they put in to Bayards Cove for repairs. Salcombe Maritime Museum, tucked into a small space near the harbor, has a collection of ship models as well as shipbuilding and sailmaking tools. The goal of the museum is to preserve the maritime heritage of the area with photographs, paintings, models and artifacts. We lived in Salcombe for a winter and walked every afternoon on Bolt Head as well as other trails along the coastal cliffs. Tennyson came to Salcombe on the yacht Sunbeam, and the bar below our house was the reputed site of his inspiration for “Crossing the Bar.” Where to stay: Soar Mill Cove Hotel, Near Salcombe, South Devon TQ7 3DS, tel: 01548-561566; www.soarmillcove.co.uk. The view from the hotel looks out on a scene framed by hills and rock outcroppings surrounding green meadows leading down to the sand beach in the cove below and out into the ocean. The coastal path crosses this view and you can walk for miles each way. Devon flowers begin in early spring with snowdrops, primroses and wild daffodils. Bluebells, then red campion and wild iris round out the spring. Summer brings orchids, dog rose and agapanthus until the red poppies arrive in the autumn.
Guest rooms include small private terraces and you can even have a dinner served there. Activities include indoor and outdoor pools, lawn tennis, pitch and putt and walking. ...More
