Buffalo Bill’s Cody: Big Hit on the Road to Yellowstone
(Last of a two-part series)
Cody, Wyoming, named for its founder and major booster, Buffalo Bill Cody, enjoyed an impressive growth after World War I, when the country was filled with hope and the townspeople were filled with ideas for finally establishing the area as a must-stop destination. And most of those ideas were – in one way or another – about roads. A terrific illustration of how an entire town can work for a common good was the establishment of frequent “Good Roads Days,” when crews of town men would devote a day to building and improving roads. The road from Cody to Yellowstone crossed the Shoshone River and passed through a canyon over an old winding road that the U.S. government had long ago built to haul material for building the dam. At first, the men in town shoveled snow in the direction of the park while Park Service laborers shoveled toward the Cody. Somewhere in the middle, the workers would meet, and the road to Yellowstone would be officially declared open for business. Most years, opening day was in mid-June; sometimes not until early July.
Despite countless setbacks – caused by both Mother Nature and human nature – the road to Yellowstone became a permanent and much-loved route for park visitors. In 1919, the Wyoming State Highway Department acknowledged that fact by beginning work on a real surfaced road from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Yellowstone. The road passed right through Cody. ...More
