Where To Buy a Nice Piece of Art

Well, you missed it again. Maybe the most prestigious art fair in the world. A great place for bargains – if you have an unlimited budget and total immunity to the euro’s power over the dollar. It’s The European Fine Art Fair, known around the word as TEFAF. This year’s extravaganza ended Sunday, March 16. But not to worry, it’ll be back next year, March 13-22, for the 22nd annual sell-off of great art and antiques in the Dutch city of Maastricht. And you’ll be in great company. This year 73,245 art lovers, private collectors and museum curators came to see (and many to buy) the finest works of art and antiquity available on the open – and legal – market. Museum representatives from 18 countries included the Hermitage in St Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Tate Britain in London, the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Modern and contemporary art, classical antiquities, Asian art, books and manuscripts were among the sections that performed particularly strongly while, as always, TEFAF’s unrivalled reputation for exhibiting high quality Old Master paintings resulted in many important sales. “There is no evidence that the jittery financial markets have discouraged art buyers and in fact the reverse seems to be true,” said Ben Janssens, Chairman of TEFAF’s Executive Committee. “Visitors said to me that they see no point in investing in stocks at the moment and prefer to put their money into art and antiques.” Maastricht-Aachen airport counted 225 private jets, bringing wealthy buyers from all over the world. During the Fair, including the Private Preview attended by a record 9,435 people, visitors drank 17,000 glasses of champagne and ate 6,000 oysters. ...More
