Avoiding Long Lines at the Airport

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

In spite of a recession that’s either waiting to happen or in full swing (whichever pundit you believe), Americans are still traveling in droves. And lines at airport parking lots, check-in counters and security lanes continue to snake around like one of Disney’s most popular rides in the middle of the summer.

There are some things you can do though to shorten your wait and anxiety level. Here are just a few to help you avoid those long airport lines.

* Print your boarding pass on your computer at home before you leave for the airport. Most airlines allow you do this within 24 hours of your flight.

* Reserve a parking spot. Go online to websites like Park ‘n Fly’s www.pnfnetwork.com and choose from a number of plans at various airport and nearby lots, including some where you can check in and get boarding passes for your flight.

* Pack light and carry your luggage on board. Or if you have to check a bag, use the curbside check in.

* Join a frequent flyer program. Many airports offer special check-in and security lanes for elite-level airline customers.

* Get “Cleared.” For a fast pass through airport security, sign up with Clear. Its members are pre-screened and given a high-tech card which allows them to access designated fast lanes in airports that offer the program. Visit www.flyclear.com for a list. First year price is $100 plus $28 Transportation Security vetting fee.
