Chill Out – Camp in the Snow
Camping is no longer limited to warm-weather adventures, especially in Michigan. The snowy winter months are finding an increasing number of outdoor enthusiasts discovering the “cozy charm that Michigan’s winter wonderland affords.”
Admittedly most of the enthusiasts spend the frosty nights in heated RV’s or cabins, but some of the really enthusiastic outdoor types cling to the purist’s view that a tent and a hearty four-season sleeping bag are all you need for a comfortable overnight snooze. Either way, nearly three-dozen private Michigan campgrounds are open year round, offering a variety of winter camping options for snowmobilers, skiers, snowshoers and other recreationalists, according to the ARVC–Michigan. For example:
The 60-acre Sno-Track Camper Village in Grayling (Roscommon County) offers a complete snowmobile service center with fuel, parts, indoor storage and trail access to the groomed Roll Trail. Twin Oaks Campground & Cabins in Wellston offers an entire winter snowmobiling program. Sitting adjacent to four trail systems: Wellston, Cadillac, Irons and Benzie County, you’ll find both RV camp sites and cabins for winter use. Groups will find organized rides and access to most park facilities for their snowmobiling enjoyment. “We do have some cross country and downhill skiers that come and go,” says Twin Oaks’ Steve and Jackie Brookhart, “but 95% are snowmobilers here for the entire winter, coming and going from their RVs and cabins.” Campers can also snowmobile right from their sites at River Park Campground in Grayling. Families will enjoy the rental cabins at Lake Huron Campground in Port Sanilac, where a skating pond, sledding hills and snowmobile trails can be found adjacent to the property.
One of the most winter-ized campgrounds is Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort in Traverse City. Several winter events are held along the miles of adjacent marked trails, including the nationally-recognized North American VASA cross country ski competition. ...More
