Travel Books

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

It’s always fun to read books on travel. In minutes you can transplant yourself to some exotic destination or you can learn everything you need to know before you take a trip. Here are a couple of guidebooks we’ve enjoyed.

26 Gorgeous Hikes on the Western Côte d'Azur
By Florence Chatzigianis

Each year, nearly 10 million people visit the French Riviera – one of France’s hottest destinations. Yet while most of those tourists are spending their days on the beaches, promenades and casinos, few are enjoying the incredible footpaths that criss-cross the region, which is why these hikes remain a well-kept secret.

Located in some of the most scenic and sometimes unusual spots, these paths skirt the flanks of red volcanic mountains that overlook the Mediterranean Sea, meander along the coast and reach inlets otherwise only accessible by boat, climb wild wooded bluffs and lead to prehistoric burial sites dating back to the early Copper Age some 4,500 years ago.

"Most visitors to the Côte d'Azur stay on the main corridors of attraction," says book author Florence Chatzigianis, who is a member of the French Hiking Federation. "Many would love to escape the crowds and veer off onto a footpath for a half-day of gentle adventure and panoramic views. They just don't know where to go for that."

The guidebook ($16.95) is available at bookstores and online from www.Amazon.com.

How to Stay Healthy & Fit on the Road
By Joanne Lichten

The average American eats four meals a week in restaurants, travelers eat even more. With most restaurant meals higher in fat and calories than what you’d eat at home, it’s difficult to eat well and stay fit while traveling.

In her book “How to Stay Healthy & Fit on the Road”,” dietitian Joann Lichten offers ways to help make any meal healthier with just a few “no big deal” changes, including:

-- Asking for pizza that’s light on the cheese.
-- Getting dressing and sauces on the side so you dip instead of pouring.
-- Trimming the visible fat off your meat.
-- Pulling the skin off roasted chicken.
-- Ask for egg substitutes in your omelet.

Many of these tid-bits you might already know but Lichten’s book offers some new ways and good reminders of bad habits we sometimes fall back on when traveling.

Available ($14.95) online at www.Amazon.com or www.drjo.com.

Drive I-95
By Stan Posner & Sandra Phillips-Posner

The fourth edition of this map/guide book is ideal for any one of the 42 million people who drive to Florida every year on Interstate 95. The authors have charted all 552 exits from Boston to Miami, telling travelers where to stop along the way for food, lodging, shopping and even golf. Plus they’ll let you know where to find a 24-hour mechanic, ATM machines and radar traps, just in case you tend to have a heavy foot on that accelerator.

The book includes 208 pages with 72 color maps, packed conveniently in a spiral paperback format with a laminated cover. Available ($23.95) online at www.amazon.com or www.drivei95.com.
