Quick Shot of Adrenaline Adventure

Here’s an item that ought to be a comforting bit of news for those of you who like a nerve-wrenching challenge to heighten your sense of adventure travel.

It’s about a short trip that’s a thrill a second while it lasts, a minimally controlled journey between the open door of an aircraft and terra firma. Yep, skydiving. And the good news is that it’s safer than ever.

According to the U.S. Parachute Association, the adrenaline sport’s premier organization, 2007 was the safest year for its participants in the last 45 years, with only 18 skydiver fatalities out of more than 2.5 million jumps at over 200 destination drop zones across the country.

Considering that in the early 1960s the USPA was only about 10 percent of its current size with just 3,353 members and the aggregate number of jumps was considerably less than today's two million plus, this record stands out even more as a testament to years of strict safety standards, training policies and programs.
