Discovering a Dreamy Vermont B&B

By Grace & Norman Mark

Applewood Manor Bed & Breakfast in Castleton, Vermont is a beautiful discovery, perhaps the most charming B&B in New England.

We spent less than $100 a night during our recent Christmas stay with memorable, delicious breakfasts and delightful hosts! This B&B with its inviting white exterior is a beautiful landmark home partially built in 1789. It sits on a 33-acre property with a trout stream (a terrific walk especially with the owners and their Golden Retriever Samson).

We had Hannah’s Room, with a commodious king canopy bed, recliner, wing-back chair and a spacious en-suite bathroom that was the size of the dining room in our first apartment.

The B&B has five guest bedrooms each decorated with antiques and stunning wallpaper. Our bed had the most comfortable sheets we have ever experienced in any hotel, motel or B&B!

The days began with perfect breakfasts of French toast or omelets prepared by our host Ralph Hirschfeld, who prided himself in the presentation of beautiful dishes. His wife, Nancy Cameron, is a helpful and charming storyteller, a font of information who even drove us to the train when our visit was over.

Our nights ended in either the library of the lounge, two charming parlors with original brick and marble fireplaces. There is also a screened-in porch and a swimming pool.

Applewood Manor is not far from the Vermont teddy bear factory, Calvin Coolidge’s home, ski trails, etc. It is also a three-hour drive from Boston, a 4-1⁄2 hour drive from New York City. The Ethan Allen train runs daily on Amtrak from Penn station but is almost never on time.
