Three New York Restaurants that Knocked our Socks Off
(Including One that Took Our Shoes)
By Grace & Norman Mark HanGawi, 12 E. 32nd Street (between Madison and 5th Avenues), New York. 212 213 0077 The best – and perhaps the only -- Korean vegetarian restaurant. The setting is one of peace and simplicity. With our shoes off, we sat at low tables with our legs dangling into the recessed floor amid Buddah statues. The music was of the sort to encourage meditation.
The food was delicious and the menu encouraged adventure. We began with Korean pear juice. Then we had the grilled todak, a crushed mountain root in a ginger soy sauce that was amazing, tasty and oddly filling, plus mushrooms in garlic. Each dish was a picture with carrots carved to look like swans. The restaurant was expensive ($84+ for a lunch of vegetables!) but well worth it because HanGawi is, as far as we know, unique and heavenly. Chola, 232 E. 58th Street, New York. 212 688 4619. Lunch buffet Mondays through Sundays, $13.95. Best deal in Indian food in New York! We were there for the Sunday buffet. With two glasses of wine, our bill came to $52.94. The dishes are arrayed on long tables, and chicken and various breads are brought to your table. Although we know and love many Indian restaurants, there were delicious dishes here that we had not experienced before. Among the dishes done to perfection were the tofu sag (spinach and ginger), the chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo and the aloo gobi (spiced potatoes and cauliflower). We also recommend the chutneys and the pickles, the soups and the raitas. In fact, our visit to Chola introduced to our new favorite Indian restaurant where the food is delicious and the buffet fit for a prince. Barbes Restaurant, 21 E. 36th Street at Madison Ave., New York 212 684 0215. Among the best of Morroccan restaurants, this is a small, friendly, energetic place. We had lamb and chicken tangines, served with the traditional ceramic cap on the plates, with a lemony taste and different sauces for each. The food was wonderful, a delightful late-Friday-night, after-theater repast. ...More
