August is here which means Labor Day is just around the corner, actually coming a bit early this year on the third of September.

That weekend is often the last hurrah for summer travelers, the last weekend, or week, to get away before school, work and a busy holiday social season begins. If you're one of those last-chance travelers, you may still be looking for a destination.

Here's some help.

According to a study conducted by Fly.com, a popular airfare search engine, New York City is America's favorite place to visit over Labor Day this year, edging out Las Vegas - always a popular destination with Americans. Always a popular spot, New York City had almost 51 million visitors last year.

The Big Apple and Sin City are joined in the top five by Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The West is also well-represented, with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu taking the seventh, eighth and tenth places respectively. Lima is the only international destination of choice, due in large part to a $239 roundtrip airfare deal (published in June) that saved LA travelers more than $500 on regular fares.

Below are the top destinations and average domestic airfares to each.

1. New York City - $394
2. Las Vegas - $267
3. Orlando - $289
4. San Juan, Puerto Rico - $310
5. Ft. Lauderdale - $283
6. Chicago - $354
7. Los Angeles - $377
8. San Francisco - $378
9. Lima, Peru - $239 (special deal)
10. Honolulu - $333

The study was conducted using data collected from over 3 million user searches and extracted domestic and international flights with departure dates Aug. 25 - Sept. 1 and return dates Sept. 2 - 9.
