The 2007 Lake Michigan Circle Tour & Lighthouse Guide was produced by the West Michigan Tourist Association and Trails Media Group of Wisconsin, and includes coverage of all four Lake Michigan shoreline states - Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Manitowoc Area Travel Planner was produced by the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau.
CALLING ALL LAKE AND LIGHTHOUSE LOVERS
" We have a shining necklace of glittering lights within easy driving distance of our two harbors, " says Kathleen Galas, President of the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau.
"What really makes this such a great place to base a lighthouse tour are all the 'maritime extras': the highly acclaimed Wisconsin Maritime Museum - a Smithsonian Affiliate, the U.S.S. Cobia Submarine, the S.S. Badger Carferry, Roger's Street Historic Fishing Village, the Marinas, six-mile Mariners Trail along Lake Michigan and the finest sandy beachcombing shore on the big lake at Point Beach State Park. This area is an ideal destination for lake and lighthouse lovers."
SEE THREE HISTORIC LIGHTS WITHIN MINUTES OF EACH OTHER
Manitowoc Breakwater Light was built in 1918. The cupola rises 52 feet above the lake which houses the sound signal. Automated in 1971, the light is considered active. It is closed to the public, but can be seen close up from a designated walkway. Location: End of the north breakwater, downtown Manitowoc.
North Pier Lighthouse in Two Rivers was built in 1876. This is a pyramid wooden tower structure. The U.S. Coast Guard deactivated the lighthouse in 1969 and donated its 15-foot high lantern to Two Rivers. It is on display at Rogers Street Historic Fishing Village at 2022 Jackson Street in Two Rivers.
Rawley Point Lighthouse was built for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and later moved to this point about five miles north of Two Rivers. This is a skeletal type structure. The U.S Coast Guard has operated a lighthouse at Rawley Point since 1853. This relocated lighthouse rises 113 feet above Lake Michigan. Its lantern is one of the largest and brightest on the Great Lakes. To get a great view of it walk along the beach in Point Beach State Park. From Two Rivers follow the signs on Highway "O" to Point Beach State Park on Sandy Bay Road.
"We have 750 rooms of excellent lodging at reasonable rates, including rooms on the shore where Lake Michigan is just steps away.
