Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Apostles Islands and based in the popular Lake Superior coastal community of Bayfield, Wisconsin, (named "The Best Little Town in the Midwest" by Alan Solomon of the Chicago Tribune) this sled-dog competition includes some 70-90 teams competing in the largest sled dog race in Northern Wisconsin. The 11th annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race, takes place Saturday and Sunday, February 4th and 5th, 2006 in Bayfield, WI.

The three-day event kicks off on Friday night with a "Meet the Mushers" spaghetti dinner at the Lakeside Pavilion that is open to the public. This is a great place to meet the folks who love dogs, spend hours on the trail and live for the adventure of racing.

"This is one of the most exciting free events in Wisconsin," says Cari Obst, Executove Director of the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce. "The dogs live to run and their high spirits, raw energy and desire just propel onto the trail at the starting line. It's a thrill to hear these four-legged athletes so eager to run. It's one of the high points of our winter season and one of the greatest winter events in the Upper Great Lakes.

The races wind through the pristine snow-covered hills and forest wilderness north of Bayfield. Musher's start the run at 10 am each day. There are more than 80 sled dog teams registered for: (1) An 8-dog, 80 miles (40 miles each day) event; (2) the 6-dog, 60 mile (30 miles each day) run; (3) a 6 dog 20-mile Sportsmen's Race on Saturday and (4) a10-mile Family Race (new in 2006).

Spectators can enjoy the race at the start/finish line in a warming tent with hot food and beverages, retail booths, restrooms and outdoors next to a huge bonfire. After the races, there's plenty for spectators to do in downtown Bayfield at boutiques, galleries, pubs, retail shops and wonderful restaurants.
